Hello everyone, I want to ask about the CPU’s: which one is better performance for webhosting and virtualization(vps)?

Here are their Intel Passmark Scores: E3-1270v3 – 10,171 The Opteron is not listed here (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html) so I’m not sure where that would rank, but I’m willing to bet the Intel ones are better choices.

Jose is correct on the RAW cpu power, but depending on how high end of a VPS node you want the e5-1620 might be the better bet due too RAM. The e3 tops out at 32gb and the E5 is an easy upgrade to 128gb ram.

Between E3-1270v3 and E5-1620, the performance will be more or less similar. You should go for E5-1620 only if you need more than 32GB RAM since that is the maximum RAM supported by the E3 series.

I would take the E3-1270v3 for sure. The E5-1620 is sandy bridge architecture, vs Haswell for the e3-1270v3.

You will also probably find the E3-1270v3 offered more by providers and cheaper since the MB for the E5 is more expensive.
